Well as summer unfortunately draws to a close so does my garden. Last night I picked the first two squash. Actually, since the plant has started to die they kind of picked themselves. After the big storm on Sunday both squash were on the ground. Much of the plants have started to die off now. The only thing that is still doing really well are the tomatoes. We have Roma tomatoes coming out our ears. Our zucchini plants are still trying to produce a few more zucchinis but they don't seem too hearty right now. I am going to try to water in some Miracle Grow and see what happens. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I will take some photos of the squash.
Our Plum tree has produced a bumper crop of little prune plums. We've filled a bag of them and there are still a ton more to pick.
The ups and downs of how my garden grows. I'm a novice gardener who just loves to grow things in my little garden.

Too Hot Garden Not Happy
I went out to have a look at the garden this evening and things look not so lush anymore. We need some nice steady rain and cooler temperatures. I picked one small cucumber and a few peas. There doesn't seem to be any further zucchinis forming.
Our plums are just about ready for picking. I picked one just to try it and within a day or two they should be ready to eat. They are still a little sour. I can't wait to try the neighbour's pears. Within a week or two they should be ready to make baked pears with.

My Hostas
Well I have planted two different kinds of hostas. One is a varigated hosta and the other one is all green. So far it looks very healthy and seems to be happy with the slightly shady spot that we've given it in our front planter. We'll cross our fingers that it decides to grow bigger next year and spread.
We got a great deal on them just as the garden store at No Frills was set to close. Hey if you wait long enough you can get some amazing prices on plants at the end of the summer. Remember you do not have to rush out with all of the crowds on the May 24 long weekend to get nice stuff.

Some Photos Of My Garden
How Deb's Garden Grows - 2010
I guess I should have started this way back in May when I first planted my garden. It would have helped me to track how everything was growing so that I can make changed from year to year. We bought our plants from Concord Foods in Vaughan. They were planted on May 26th, 2010. The entire summer has been extremely hot and humid and very little rain. We've had to water a lot, as the plants are look rather distressed by the end of the day.
Peas - This year we planted Snow Peas. They were planted on the right end of the garden. They did ok but not as well as last year. We only got a handful of peas. Once the heat of the summer came we got a few smaller peas. Our 2nd crop did not produce at all. Strangely enough we planted all of the peas from the same package with all of the flowers being white and one plant had purple flowers. We shall see what becomes of this lone purple flowering pea plant.
Tomatoes - This year we planted 4 Roma Tomato plants on the back right side of the garden. They so far have produced rather well. We have harvested 3 nice sized tomatoes and the taste was nice. They tasted far better than last year's bitter cherry tomatoes.
Lettuce - We planted Romane Lettuce along the front right side of the garden. We only got a few plants even thought we planted many seeds. I'm not sure what happened. The lettuce was harvested and the taste was strong and a little bitter but ok with salad dressing on it.
Carrots - We planted a full packet of carrot seeds and we may have 5 very small carrot tops. I highly doubt that they will actually produce an actual carrot. Next year no carrots!
Cucumbers - We planted two different kinds of cucumbers. The first type were the Long English Telegraph Cucumbers. So far they have produced two very nice sized cucumbers and the taste was very nice and not too many seeds. Then the 2nd type was the shorter variety with many seeds. Unfortunately this kind has only produced short stumpy little cucumbers. The taste is good but the plants are not holding up well to the intense heat and humidity. Some of the leaves of both types of cucumber plants have yellow spots on them.
Zucchini - This year I planted two different types of zucchini. The 1st type is the regular green zucchini that in August is just starting to produce fruit. I've had 3 zucchini so far that grew to about 7 inches in lengeth. The growth was very slow at first. We had far too many male flowers and hardly any female flowers. The 2nd type was the Yellow Zucchini. They are growing much slower and so far in August we have only had two yellow zucchinis produced. The skin on them are more tough and the fruit produced are not as big. Next year only green zucchini.
Squash - This year we tried something totally new for our garden...squash. We had no idea how to grow it but so far it's the best producing thing in the entire garden. We planted Acorn Squash and, as of yet, unidentified squash that was a mislabelled plant from the garden store. It could possibly be a spagetti squash if it turns yellow. I'll keep you posted and will take photos if anyone would be so kind to identify my garden mystery.
