The End Is Near For This Year's Garden

September 1, 2011 and I've pulled out half of my garden.  Because of the intense heat and lack of rain this growing season didn't go so well.  We had only a handful of little snow peas, 4 zucchini, 2 cucumbers, no potatoes, no garlic and a ton of Roma tomatoes.  The only thing that did rather well were the Roma tomatoes.  We did have some bottom rot on some of them but still had enough to make it a good growing season for the tomatoes at least.  I also ended up with two Italian zucchini plants that had some really pretty flowers but no actual zucchini.  What a waste.

First Pick Of The Season

Ok folks here you will see the very first cucumber that we've picked from the garden.  Two zucchinis and two little peas.  Ok truth be told there were three but someone ate one.
Here you see Neal and two of the peas we just picked.

Here are some of the things that are growing in my garden this year.

This is a photo of my very 1st English cucumber.  There seems to be a problem with one of the plants turning yellow, but I think it may have to do with the fact that it's been really hot outside for so long now with no rain.  I've watered every day to try to keep everything alive.
This is a photo of the zucchini that is almost ready to pick.  There seems to be two different kinds of zucchinis growing this year.  The usual green zucchini that you see here and some other kind with white flowers that don't seem to be producing anything but flowers.
This are my Roma tomatoes.  They are doing amazing and I really hope we like tomatoes because we're going to get a ton of them.

The Garden Is Doing Amazing!

This is a photo of our two Hosta plants.  You can just see how they are getting ready to bloom.  It's all very exciting as I really didn't think that they would survive.  Since they've done so well I think I will buy some more so that they go all the way around the planter.
This is a photo of the zucchini plants growing really well.  They seem to like having a tomato cage around them so that they can climb and keep off of the wet earth.
You can just see the start of my first zucchini at the top of the yellow flower.  Keep your fingers crossed that nothing eats the zucchini before it gets big enough to pick it.
This is a photo of our very first Roma Tomato.  I think it has at least a few more days before this baby turns red.
This is a photo of my peas just starting to crawl up the trellis and some more tomato plants next to them.

This is a photo of my little strawberries.  We have tons of them and they really taste great.  So much sweeter than what you get in the store.

Peas Are Sprouting

So it's been a week of heavy rain and now some very warm temperatures and my peas have emerged from the ground only a week after they were planted.  Our neighbor was kind enough to give us their trellis for the peas to climb up on.  So far so good in our garden.  The plants are growing and my flowers are blooming and by tonight I will have my first strawberry.  It's all very exciting!

The Plants Are In

So after a tiring 3 hours working in the garden my plants are in.  There are 12 Roma tomato plants, 6 zucchini plants, 4 cucumber plants, garlic, snow peas and potatoes.  By the time I was done I was totally exhausted and soaked.  Let's all cross our fingers for a great growing season with rain and sun when we need it and nice warm temperatures.  Oh and the strawberries are doing great!!!  In a few weeks we should have a ton of them.

The Good News And The Bad News

The good news is that I have turned the soil in the garden. The bad news is that it won't stop raining so that I can plant anything. I've bought a hanging strawberry plant and the strawberries in the front of our house are blooming like crazy. All of the tulips are blooming and look fantastic. All of our trees and plants are coming to life and much to the dismay of Neal our grass is out of control. Now all we need is some warmer temperatures and dryer conditions so that we can plant this weekend. Stay tuned for more planting news.

Spring Is Almost Here

So we are finally getting to the end of another very long winter.  I am itching to get back into the garden to start planting my veggies.  Everything would have been fine except for the fresh dumping of snow March 23rd.  My tulips had finally started to poke their tiny leaves out of the ground and the strawberry plants were perking up.  All I can hope for now is that the plants will be ok and that the snow won't stick around for too long.  I already have garlic in and with any luck they will be doing whatever they need to do so that I can pick it come late summer.  Now I just need to sketch the rest of the garden.  More soon!
